The 5,000-year-old art of falconry in Kazakhstan

The art of falconry has existed for 5,000 years. In Asia, the greatest falconer was considered to be Genghis Khan. He even had a ranking system that specified who was allowed to hunt with which bird. Genghis Khan himself hunted only with a gyrfalcon, and touching this bird was punishable by death.
Falconry was highly developed among the ancient Kazakhs. Hunting was not only a form of entertainment but also an essential means of obtaining food. During times of war, a single eagle hunter (berkutchi) could provide food for an entire aul (village).
